Deciding on the type of treatment, conservation or restoration, essentially depends on the historical value of the object: if the carpet is ancient and unique, preference is given to a conservation treatment.
The restoration of a carpet involves the restitution of the techniques used in its fabrication: the colours should match as closely as possible those of the original, and the number of knots per m2 should be identical.
In a conservation treatment the areas of loss are consolidated by stitching to localised textile supports of a weave, nature and colour that are adapted to the object; the edges of areas of loss and the warps are consolidated by couching stiches to the textile support.
